Job Description

The Vascular Access Nurse is a Registered Nurse who possesses knowledge and skills regarding vascular access device placement. The Vascular Access Nurse will demonstrate appropriate patient assessment and safe placement of a multitude of vascular devices including: peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC – upper and lower extremity), mid-line intravenous catheter, intraosseous access, ultrasound guided PIV catheter, central venous catheter, temporary hemodialysis catheters, and/or arterial line. The vascular access nurse will have experience in insertion and maintenance of these lines. The individual will serve as a clinical expert, resource, and consultant to hospital staff regarding IV therapy according to professional nursing practice standards, specific facility policy/procedures, the Infusion Nurses Society Standards of Care, and the Association of Vascular Access. Essential Job Functions include thorough knowledge and proficient technical ability in the use of vascular access device equipment (Ultrasound, ECG based tip location device), troubleshooting, accessing, dressing central venous catheters as well as implanted tunneled central lines. Educates and/or orients new staff members and serves as an educational resource related to PICC’s and IV therapy for patients, family members, ancillary services, medical staff, administrative staff, and the community served by Bon Secours Mercy Health Care. Adheres to age specific delivery of care and the appropriate insertion of vascular access devices from the pediatric to adult populations. Reports quality issues regarding products and services. Collect and analyze data, enter charges, and reconcile charges as assigned. Serves as a clinical expert, resource, and consultant to hospital staff regarding IV therapy according to professional nursing practice standards, specific facility policy/procedures, the Infusion Nurses Society Standards of Care, and the Association of Vascular Access. Licensing/Certification required: Valid driver’s license, Registered Nurse license in Ohio, BLS, ACLS; VA-BC preferred or required within 1 year. Education required: ASN; BSN preferred.
